Skin Cancer Treatment & Reconstruction

Skin Cancer Treatment and Reconstruction

Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer in the United States, making proper skin cancer treatment of vital importance  There are many different kinds of skin cancer, but the most common ones are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. The most common cause of skin cancer is overexposure to the sun.

Because skin cancer is so common today, it is absolutely crucial to be inspected by a trained medical professional at the earliest sign of a problem. The earlier that skin cancer treatment is begun, the more likely it is to be successful. It is always important to remember that this skin cancer treatment can only remove tumors on the skin. If cancer has developed in another part of the body, additional surgery or chemotherapy may be required.

The most effective skin cancer treatment is surgery that removes the affected area of skin. This type of surgery is extremely precise, often requiring a multi-disciplinary approach involving experts from several fields of medicine. Dr. Achih H. Chen, serving the Evans, Georgia and Augusta area as well as Aiken, South Carolina, working together with board certified dermatologist, dermatopathologist and Mohs micrographic surgeon, Dr. Daniel Sheehan use state-of-the-art techniques to completely remove skin cancer, to preserve the most amount of normal tissue possible and to perform post-skin cancer reconstruction.

Mohs micrographic surgery is a very precise technique of removing skin skin cancer from cosmetically important areas of the body such as the face. In the technique, removed skin cells are immediately examined microscopically by board certified dermatopathologist, Dr. Daniel Sheehan, to determine complete removal of the skin cancer. Dermatopathology is the specialty of microscopically examining skin disorders. Following complete removal, Dr. Achih Chen performs reconstruction of the post-skin cancer removal defect in the area of critical cosmetical importance, the face.

State-of-the-art skin cancer treatment and reconstruction is performed by Dr. Daniel J. Sheehan and Dr. Achih H. Chen at Harmonie Medical Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center, conveniently located immediately adjacent to the Georgia Center for Facial Plastic Surgery.
