Rhinoplasty

The shape of the nose can often be a source of self-consciousness for individuals who feel that it is not proportionate to their other facial features. Facial plastic surgeon Dr. Achih H. Chen specializes in rhinoplasty at his Augusta, GA-area practice and performs nose surgery (rhinoplasty) for patients who would like to reshape their noses to give their faces better harmony and aesthetic balance. He also serves rhinoplasty patients from Columbia and Charleston, SC, in addition to metro Atlanta residents.

Dr. Chen is highly skilled at nose surgery procedures and is committed to helping you reach your goals. Request a consultation with Dr. Chen using the online form, or call The Georgia Center for Facial Plastic Surgery in Evans at (706) 210-2625.

What Is Rhinoplasty?

The perfect nose is an elusive ideal. Instead of a single “perfect” nose for everyone, the ideal nose is a nose that fits the individual’s face. It is one that is in harmony with the other facial features and one that allows areas such as the eyes to be the focal point of visual contact. The ultimate goal of rhinoplasty is always to tailor the nose so that it becomes harmonious with the other facial features.

Rhinoplasty is designed to reshape the external nose. The procedure has undergone extensive evolution as nasal anatomy and physiology have become better understood. Initially, rhinoplasties often resulted in a “scooped-out,” “turned-up,” or “pinched-in” look that was often characterized as “operated-on.” Since then, improved techniques and procedures have dramatically revolutionized nose surgery. The goal of modern rhinoplasty is a natural-appearing nose that is in harmony with other facial features.

Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty may be performed through 2 approaches: The endonasal approach and the external approach (sometimes referred to as closed rhinoplasty and open rhinoplasty). The endonasal approach uses only intranasal incisions (inside the nose), while the external approach also incorporates a skin incision hidden in a shadow along the columella (the bridge of skin between the nostrils). The approach that is chosen depends upon individual anatomy and surgical goals.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

Dr. Chen typically performs rhinoplasty with patients under deep sedation. Postoperative discomfort is minimal. Bruising and swelling vary from individual to individual but, if present, usually present around the lower eyelids. These symptoms usually resolve within 1 to 2 weeks. A nasal splint placed on the external nose is removed at 6 to 7 days postoperatively. Patients may return to light activities within a few days, but should reserve vigorous exercise until 2 weeks after surgery. Contact sports should be avoided for 4 weeks.*
