This is an Aiken, SC area patient who was bothered by the deepening of her nasolabial folds or the parentheses around her mouth (the curved creases running from the corner of the nose to the corner of the mouth). This deepening was due to the loss of volume from her mid-face or cheek area that is the result of the loss of fat that occurs with the aging face. Conventional wisdom is that her concerns would be treated with a lifting and tightening procedure of the mid-face called the mid-facelift. However, Augusta and Evans, GA Facial Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Achih H. Chen, has found that while lifting and tightening works well for restoring the jaw and neckline, it will flatten and widen the mid-face region creating an unnatural, operated appearance. The youthful face has volume in the mid-face, as a result, Dr. Chen found that restoring the lost volume creates the most natural rejuvenation of the mid-face region. Dr. Chen restored the lost volume in this patient with a technique called the Total VolumeLift. Notice how restoring mid-face volume recreates a natural-appearing youthful mid-face area, not a tight or pulled appearance. She also underwent a deep plane facelift technique, the Total Lift to restore her jaw and neckline.

Details: The loss of volume in the mid-face area causes the cheek area to deflate and sag downward, making the nasolabial folds to appear deeper. Notice how restoring the volume, while it does not make the nasolabial folds disappear, results in a more youthful appearance (red arrows in views 1 and 2).
